The Beaches’ Favourite Spots In Toronto

Just announced, Toronto-based rock band The Beaches will be taking over the iHeartRadio MMVAs stage in what is sure to be one of the hottest performances of the night.

The JUNO award-winning group known for its stomping drums, brash rocker confidence, and retro style, takes its name from the Toronto neighbourhood where most of its members grew up. Showing nothing but love for their hometown, bandmates Leandra Earl, Eliza Enman-McDaniel, and sisters Jordan and Kylie Miller previously sat down with Elle Canada to dish on all their beloved places to grab a bite in the city. We also scoured their Instagram feeds to round up some of their favourite spots in Toronto too. Wanna eat, drink, and bowl like The Beaches? Read on!

Coffee—Dark Horse

Hailing from Toronto’s east end, it comes as no surprise that most of The Beaches’ go-to food places are in this area—most importantly, their morning place for a warm cup of joe.

Doughnuts—Krispy Kreme

The Beaches enjoy sweets just as much as the next girl. They opt for Krispy Kreme’s glazed doughnuts when in the mood for a sugary treat.

Burger—Harry’s Charbroiled

Even this girl band understands the importance of a good burger. The group equates the burgers here to that of In-N-Out’s with their juicy patties, and crisp, classic toppings.

Late Night Hangout—The Lakeview

Open 24/7 and adored my many, The Lakeview makes for the perfect late night hangout place post-show or after a midnight recording session.

Sandwich—Bonjour Brioche

The band’s studio is located in Leslieville, and when they’re too busy recording songs to take a full break, they run around the corner to Bonjour Brioche for fresh, French-style sandwiches. Kylie says the café’s roast beef and brie combination makes for “the best sandwich in the city.”

Greek Food—Asteria

The Danforth’s Asteria has a special place in The Beaches’ hearts with its owners having gone to high school with Kylie and Jordan’s dad. Their favourites here include chicken souvlaki, saganaki, tzatziki, and lots of pita bread.

Park—Trinity Bellwoods

In a contemporary city where it seems that everyone is always hustling, Toronto is lucky to have a lush green space right in its downtown. Trinity Bellwoods makes for the perfect Sunday Funday—even The Beaches know it.

Ice Cream—Ed’s Real Scoop

Not just her favourite ice cream spot, Ed’s Real Scoop is Kylie’s favourite place in the Beaches—period. With sweet, homemade ice cream in an array of seasonal flavours and generous staff, Kylie says the spot just makes her happy.

It’s still summer right?

Beach—The Beaches

Of course one of the band’s top spots would be their namesake. Being located in one of Toronto’s neighbourhoods directly on the waterfront means lots of time for sun and surf.

Diner—Garden Gate Restaurant

Although Jordan admits it’s not the best diner in the city, the retro Queen East joint feels like home to her. The band has spent a lot of time here, chowing down on classic diner eats after guitar lessons growing up.

Thrifting—Kensington Market

When looking for a good deal on mom jeans, vintage boots, graphic tees, and more, The Beaches head to Toronto’s Kensington Market to do their thrifiting.

Sushi—Yumei Sushi

For when they don’t want to be recognized, Yumei Sushi is the perfect spot with private booths and drop curtains to offer a more intimate experience. Kylie notes she often takes her mom here when they’re looking for a quiet spot to dine.

Bowling—Danforth Bowl

Bowling never goes out of style. When the band is looking to take a break with a fun activity, they hit up Danforth Bowl. This old-school, small venue is also where the group celebrated Kylie’s 20th birthday last year.

Indian Food—Banjara

When it comes to Banjara’s Indian food, The Beaches is all about sharing. The group will get a full spread of butter chicken, garlic naan, paneer, vegetable daal, pakora, mango lassis, and more when filling up at this spot.

Movie Theatre—The Royal Cinema

Even big name artists enjoy going to the movies! Toronto’s Royal Cinema is like stepping back into the ’40s with its art deco inspired design and it’s safe to assume it’s a spot that has come to influence The Beaches’ retro aesthetic.

Live Music Venue—Horseshoe Tavern

Toronto has numerous great places for live entertainment, but an essential spot for The Beaches is Horseshoe Tavern. More of a dive, but filled with fresh talent, the live performances here rarely disappoint.

Bar—The Comrade

This Leslieville bar is known for its chill ambience and delicious snacks, with the girls regularly choosing to munch on a selection of bone marrow, steak tartare, and oysters. To drink, they’ll either go for dry martinis or strong vodka spritzers.

Summer Event—The CNE

Not even The Beaches can resist the carnival-style fun of the Canadian National Exhibition. Filled with fair games, outrageous foods, and live music, The Beaches have been spotted a few times at this annual event.

Most recently, The Beaches stopped by FORA HQ to get chatty and crafty in the latest instalment of Set The Mood. They spilled the details on their latest record, what it’s like to work with Metric’s Emily Haines, and how they get inspired from American Horror Story.
