Shawn Mendes Closes The Show With Emotional ‘In My Blood’ Performance
Pop superstar Shawn Mendes is no stranger to the iHeartRadio MMVAs—the 20-year-old singer-songwriter made his debut performance during the 2015 awards show and then returned in 2016. But tonight’s performance of “In My Blood,” the lead single off his self-titled third studio album, has proven that the Canadian artist is an iHeartRadio MMVAs necessity.
Wearing a plain black t-shirt and a guitar strapped to his waist, Mendes brought the song’s emotional lyrics to life, crafting an intimate atmosphere despite performing in front of thousands of screaming fans. Delivering a raw and captivating performance of the vulnerable track, Mendes effortlessly commanded the attention of the crowd from his spot at the centre of the stage.
Mendes’ third record, released this past May, includes a handful of jittery, radio-friendly, up-tempo tracks such as “Nervous” and “Lost in Japan” as well as some more mature, emotionally personal ballads including his “Like to Be You” duet with 2017 iHeartRadio MMVAs performer Julia Michaels. Mendes has been busy promoting his self-titled album since announcing it back in April and will continue to do so well into 2019 with a massive worldwide stadium tour, hitting a total of 56 countries spanning across two continents.
In addition to his emotional performance, Mendes took home the award for Artist of the Year and was also nominated across eight different categories including Best Pop Artist or Group, Fan Fave Artist, and Video of the Year for “In My Blood.”
The 2018 iHeartRadio MMVAs, hosted by Awkwafina, features performances from 98 Degrees, The Beaches, Bebe Rexha, Brett Kissel, bülow, Meghan Trainor, Shawn Mendes, Kris Wu ( 吴亦凡), 5 Seconds of Summer, Alessia Cara, Halsey, and Marshmello featuring Anne-Marie.
