Shawn Mendes’ Best Moments From The 2018 iHeartRadio MMVAs
The 2018 iHeartRadio MMVAs were an unforgettable one with the biggest artists in the world and some of the most exciting up and coming acts taking home awards and commanding the stage in exhilarating performances.
One artist who fans kept screaming for and even fellow celebrities kept talking about was pop artist Shawn Mendes. The Toronto native has taken the music world by storm over recent years having already seen three consecutive albums debut at No. 1 at just 20 years old, made Time’s list of 100 most influential people in the world, and continues to rack up award after award at every show he attends.
The 2018 iHeartRadio MMVAs were no different for Mendes who saw his recent successes highlighted by fellow artists at the annual awards show with multiple wins, mesmerizing performances, and even a surprise or two throughout the broadcast. Here are some of the best Shawn Mendes moments from the 2018 iHeartRadio MMVAs. You can watch the full show here.
He kicked off the show with an explosive opening performance.
Taking the stage on his own, Mendes kicked off the 2018 iHeartRadio MMVAs with his jittering, dancey track “Lost in Japan.” With his guitar in hand and backed by his band, the Canadian artist turned the show’s energy level up with thousands of screaming fans in the audience joining in to sing along. Afterwards, host Awkwafina declared, “Now that’s how you start a party!”
He chatted on the red carpet about his impressive year in music.
Prior to taking over the main stage, Mendes arrived on the iHeartRadio MMVAs red carpet in a classic, all-black ensemble to talk with iHeartRadio’s Patrick Langlois and eTalk’s Chloe Wilde. They discussed what keeps him coming back to the iHeartRadio MMVAs after all these years, in addition to his recent performance at Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday party—-an encounter he described as “pretty relaxed.”
He surprised the audience by joking that he’s EDM DJ and music producer Marshmello.
In a shocking turn of events that surprised everyone from the viewers at home to those in the audience and even award presenters Derek Hough and Awkwafina, Marshmello took off his helmet during his acceptance speech for Best EDM/Dance Artist—something he has never done before as the artist’s identity remains a mystery. But when the DJ took off his helmet, it was actually Shawn Mendes spoofing the audience underneath.
He cleaned house, winning a total of four awards.
Mendes racked up the awards at last night’s show, winning four out of the eight categories he was nominated in, making him the most nominated artist at the 2018 iHeartRadio MMVAs, as well as the artist with the most wins. The next artist who even came remotely close to Mendes’ award total was Drake who won two out of his seven nominations.
Humbly accepting each award as if it was his first, Mendes took home the hardware for Best Pop Artist or Group, Fan Fave Artist, Fan Fave Video for “In My Blood,” and Artist of the Year.
“Honestly, what I mainly want to say is thank you to everybody who follows an artist when they try to explore musically and support them through that journey,” he said after picking up one of his four iHeartRadio MMVAs. “That means the world to me.”
He closed the show with yet another unforgettable performance.
While Mendes is no stranger to the iHeartRadio MMVAs having performed at the 2015 and 2016 shows, it was his closing performance of “In My Blood” at this year’s program that solidified Mendes as an iHeartRadio MMVAs necessity moving forward.
Wearing a plain black t-shirt with a guitar strapped to his waist, Mendes brought the vulnerable track’s emotional lyrics to life, crafting an intimate atmosphere despite performing in front of thousands of screaming fans. Delivering a raw and captivating performance of the lead single of his self-titled third studio album, Mendes effortlessly commanded the attention of the crowd from his spot at the centre of the stage.
