Karena Evans Wins Best Director For Drake’s ‘God’s Plan’ Music Video
In one of the first awards of the night, filmmaker Karena Evans won the iHeartRadio MMVA for Best Director. Evans was at the Red Carpet show tonight where she accepted the award for her work on Drake’s “God’s Plan” music video from iHeartRadio’s Patrick Langlois.
When asked if it was difficult to keep the story for the “God’s Plan” video under wraps, Evans admitted that it was stressful but that when it comes to working with a star as big as Drake, it kind of comes with the package.
“God’s Plan” was released this past February and sees the 6 God himself take the video’s nearly million-dollar budget and give it all back to people in need in Miami. The song shattered both Spotify and Apple Music’s streaming records for the most single-day streams. The track also remained the No. 1 song on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart for 10 consecutive weeks.
Drake is up for a total of seven awards, making him the second most nominated iHeartRadio MMVAs artist behind fellow Torontonian Shawn Mendes. His nominations include Best Hip-Hop Artist or Group, Video of the Year for “God’s Plan,” and Song of the Summer for “Nice for What,” just to name a few.
The 2018 iHeartRadio MMVAs, hosted by Awkwafina, features performances from 98 Degrees, The Beaches, Bebe Rexha, Brett Kissel, bülow, Meghan Trainor, Shawn Mendes, Kris Wu (吴亦凡), 5 Seconds of Summer, Alessia Cara, Halsey, and Marshmello featuring Anne-Marie.
