The Best Covers From Our iHeartRadio MMVAs Performers And Nominees

When an artist takes a song done by another artist and makes it their own, their performance can unravel a whirlwind of elements that leave listeners speechless. Great covers can highlight certain attributes to a song that you may have previously overlooked, and they can also extend their presence to fan bases that may have otherwise skimmed over them on their Spotify playlist. It was a tough call, but we’ve rounded up our top five covers sung by our roster of iHeartRadio MMVAs performers and nominees.

1. 5 Seconds of Summer cover “The Middle” by Zedd, Maren Morris, and Grey

The boys of 5SOS stopped by Sirius XM’s Hits 1 stage earlier this year to perform their own acoustic version of Zedd, Maren Morris, and Grey’s “The Middle.” In their slowed down rendition, they utilize three guitars and a shaker to strip back the original fast-paced dance beat that Zedd is famous for. Here’s to hoping that they include this catchy cover during their performance at this year’s iHeartRadio MMVAs.

2. Hayley Kiyoko covers “Lips Are Movin” by Meghan Trainor

The 27-year-old singer has definitely made a name for herself this year. From releasing the red-hot video with Kehlani for “What I Need” which instantly went viral, to being crowned Lesbian Jesus on social media, Kiyoko is burning up, and her stream of success isn’t slowing down anytime soon. The “Gravel To Tempo” singer released her own version of Meghan Trainor’s “Lips Are Movin,” and it sounds nothing like the original. The singer slows down the beat as she croons the chorus, all while pulling off flawless choreography in the music video that she also co-directed. Talk about triple-threat.

3. Arkells cover “Stay” by Alessia Cara and Zedd

Arkells are on the road to quickly becoming a quintessential Canadian band. The Hamilton-based boys, along with the help of Allie X, added an indie-rock vibe to fellow Canadian Alessia Cara’s “Stay.” The jazz-inspired use of the saxophone and drums make their performance sound very different from the EDM-based original song, and we love every minute of it.

4. Shawn Mendes covers “Psycho” by Post Malone

Before performing his own “In My Blood” during his visit to the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge, Shawn Mendes took the audience by surprise as he began his rendition of Post Malone’s “Psycho.” The 20-year-old singer stripped back the modern hip hop beat by adding acoustic guitars and a soft piano to his performance, and he gave his own spin on the song by crooning into the mic and adding his signature falsettos, which made the song sound like more soft-rock than hip hop.

5. Alessia Cara covers “Stitches” by Shawn Mendes

Before Alessia Cara was even signed by a major record label, Shawn Mendes was the first person to ever shout her out on social media and repost her cover. The Canadian cuties have been friends ever since, so it only makes sense that Cara covers Mendes’ smash with her soothing, buttery smooth vocals.

Catch Shawn Mendes and Alessia Cara at the 2018 iHeartRadio MMVAs alongside other performers Megan Trainor, Halsey, 5 Seconds Of Summer, and Kris Wu.

The 2018 iHeartRadio MMVAs hosted by Awkwafina go down Sunday, August 26 at 9/7 MT on CTV and Much.
