5 Seconds Of Summer Set The Stage On Fire With Performance Of ‘Youngblood’
This year 5 Seconds of Summer lit up the iHeartRadio MMVAs stage, absolutely killing their debut performance.
Appearing for the first time at the annual awards show, the Australian punk-rock group hit the biggest block party of the summer with a fiery performance of “Youngblood,” the title track from their impressive third studio album.
Adhering to the aesthetic of their “Youngblood” music video, 5 Seconds of Summer embodied Japan’s rockabilly culture with a powerful performance equipped with all the smoke effects expected of a rock show. Embracing their more mature sound, three of the band members dressed in simple, dark outfits (apart from bassist Calum Hood, who wore a bright red polo) and commanded the stage while percussionist Ashton Irwin remained at the back of the stage, going to town on the drums.
This year marked 5SOS’s inaugural performance at the iHeartRadio MMVAs as well as the newcomers’ first nomination, with the group going up against Imagine Dragons, Maroon 5, BTS, Sofi Tukker, and The Chainsmokers for Fan Fave Duo or Group.
Bandmates Luke Hemmings, Calum Hood, Ashton Irwin, and Michael Clifford were introduced by E! Very Cavallari star Kristin Cavallari and Jersey Shore’s Jenni ‘JWoww’ Farley.
Following the group’s sophomore album, 5SOS stepped away from the spotlight to re-evaluate their sound instead of quickly releasing another album full of radio singles guaranteed to please their fan base. Forgoing the “She Looks So Perfect” pop-punk sound that inspired comparisons to blink-182 and Sum 41, the band re-emerged with a slick dance sound and new rock-focused vibe that made for an unforgettable debut performance.
The 2018 iHeartRadio MMVAs, hosted by Awkwafina, features performances from 98 Degrees, The Beaches, Bebe Rexha, Brett Kissel, bülow, Meghan Trainor, Shawn Mendes, Kris Wu (吴亦凡), 5 Seconds of Summer, Alessia Cara, Halsey, and Marshmello featuring Anne-Marie.
